When Are Dentures Necessary?

Dentures are necessary whenever you’ve lost one or more teeth, and you’ve decided against alternatives like dental bridges or dental implants in Stamford. Tooth loss is a serious oral health problem. It can cause further issues like teeth shifting, a higher susceptibility to gum disease, and problems with eating your favorite foods. Dentures are an affordable, fast, and simple way to restore your smile, making them an excellent option for treating tooth loss in Stamford.

Partial Dentures

If you’re missing just a few teeth, we will recommend partial dentures. These consist of several false teeth, which are attached to a durable metal and plastic framework. This framework snaps onto your healthy teeth. This holds the false teeth securely in the gaps where your missing teeth used to be. Partial dentures look very natural, last a long time, and are a cost-effective way to replace your missing teeth.

Full Dentures

A set of full dentures can be used to replace the upper, lower, or both rows of teeth. A gum-colored acrylic base is used to support a full row of natural, durable, and strong false teeth.

However, full dentures are only a good option if you’ve lost most or all of your teeth. This is because they must fit directly over your gums. For a proper fit, any remaining teeth must be extracted, even if they are healthy.

WHAT TO EXPECT

The Denture Placement Process

First, Dr. Park or Dr. Kwon will examine your mouth, and determine if dentures are right for you. If you’re approved, they will take a variety of images, molds, and measurements of your teeth and gums. These are used by our partner dental lab to create a set of test dentures.

‍Your first set of test dentures will arrive at our office in a week or two, and you’ll come back to try them on. Our Stamford dentists will discuss their fit with you, and take notes to adjust and improve them. This process may be repeated several times until your ideal fit has been achieved.

‍Once the fit is perfect, your final set of dentures will be made by our partner dental lab, and sent to our office. You’ll come in one last time to pick them up, and to get instructions on how to wear them and care for them. Then, simply go home and enjoy your new smile.

Trusted Teeth Replacement Option

Benefits Of Choosing Dentures

Affordability is a huge benefit. Compared to alternatives like dental implants and dental bridges, dentures are much more affordable. The cost is also usually covered, at least partially, by dental insurance.

They also are a faster and simpler way to restore your smile compared to some treatments like dental implants, which can take months. If you want to get your smile back quickly, dentures from our Stamford dental office are a good option.

But the biggest benefit is that dentures help restore your smile and preserve the appearance of your face. Dentures can even make you look younger, since tooth loss is often associated with old age. You’ll also be able to speak clearly and eat your favorite foods, though it may take a little while to get used to how your new dentures feel.

NEW DENTURES

How To Adjust To New Dentures

If you’re feeling some discomfort and difficulty doing everyday tasks with your dentures in the beginning, this is completely normal. It takes about 30 days to adjust to the feeling of dentures in your mouth. Over time, eating and speaking will become easier.

You may experience tender gums, excessive saliva, and diet restrictions in the beginning. You should stick to soft foods for the first month. It might be difficult to chew or even cause some pain when you eat in the beginning because you aren’t used to this pressure being placed on your gums from the dentures.

This will subside over time, but you can take anti-inflammatory pain medication to alleviate this. Rinsing with saltwater solutions every day will also reduce swelling and inflammation. Your mouth may produce extra saliva because it detects a foreign object in your body.

As you adjust, this will reduce, but in the meantime, you can chew on a piece of candy to encourage more swallowing. You may also notice that you sound louder than normal. This will dissipate over time. In the beginning, it will be difficult to pronounce certain sounds. The best way to get around this is to practice speaking and reading out loud.

CARING FOR YOUR DENTURES

How To Properly Care For Your Dentures

Caring for your dentures is all about knowing when to remove them, how to clean them, and how to store them. You should remove your dentures at night, before going to sleep. Dentures are not designed to be worn 24 hours a day.

This will cause a buildup of bacteria in your mouth and can cause oral health problems and gum irritation. When you take your dentures out for the night, you need to store them in a denture solution to retain their moisture and prevent them from drying out.

We recommend rinsing your dentures out when you take them out and before putting them back in to ensure there’s no residue on them when you put them in. Clean your dentures twice a day with a soft-bristled toothbrush and denture cleaning solution.

Clean all of the surfaces of your dentures. Then, when you take them out, clean the tissues in your mouth with fresh gauze or a soft toothbrush. Avoid running your dentures under hot water, because this can damage your dentures by morphing their mold.

AM I A GOOD CANDIDATE

For Dentures?

Dentures are best for patients who have lost some or most of their teeth and are not good candidates for dental implants. Dentures will help restore your smile and make it easier to chew and speak. If you prefer a cost-effective restoration that can replace a large number of teeth in a short time frame, dentures are unbeatable.

They also don’t require invasive oral surgery, unlike dental implants. However, you may need to have your remaining teeth extracted if you are getting full dentures.
